Direction

I don't do New Year's resolutions.  I really don't even set goals.  Well, I do, but I never remember them past the first couple of weeks.  One year I remember getting some big sheets of paper and splitting them in to twelve blocks.  The idea was to set some goals that could be worked on over the year by breaking them in to small things to achieve each month. Good idea.  Lousy implementation!

I still want to set my sights on achieving something but don't wish to try for something too ambitious for fear of not finishing.  But the other side of this is the possibility of aiming high, and even if I don't get there I will have got further than had I not tried at all.

I want to work some more on the idea I had about only buying clothing/shoes/accessories that are made either by myself or in a manner than in some way goes to support local business - one could say The Warehouse qualifies there, but I excluding it explicitly, out loud to make this more about changing my thinking rather than allowing myself to go for the quick fix.  Having said that, I bought a pair of school shoes the other day that appealed to the part of me that wants to be able to show off my socks - when I finally get around to knitting some for me! Mary-jane style with a chunky sole...just what I was looking for but not really in the spirit of this thing.

The other thing here is that I have lousy style.  But am prepared to work on that.  I think I'll start of simply .  I have a couple of pairs of jeans I don't wear often enough...they need the waistband ripped off and seams at the hips and waist adjusted to fit me before replacing the waistband.  They will look good with my shoes and some groovy socks.

I shall have to find my Burda mags and flick through them for some inspiration.  Find some easy to make, easy to wear tops - copy off a few patterns and make them fit properly! How difficult can that be?!?  Should I set myself a goal of one new sewn item each month?  Really need to make a proper plan, with a colour palette so I'm not going of willy nilly making stuff that doesn't go together!  Red, white and blue.  All my favourite colours. I have a blue cardi planned for sometime down the track when I have my partner's jumper done (currently almost finished one sleeve that needs six inches ripped back and reknit - that was my unachieved goal for today - I got waylaid on Ravelry and various knitting blogs as well as decluttering my Google Reader finally!).  Perhaps I shall build me a nifty little Google Doc and some kind of task list reminders for later months to try and keep momentum.  I love the planning part.  Execution is not my strong part.  Long term goals require more stickability than I currently have...diminishing as each year goes by and I see myself more clearly for what I am...a dream-big, idealist. That doesn't mean I shouldn't try.  I can only improve on my unstylishly awful clothing choices.  Learning some good fitting techniques will help. I hope.

There is another reason I'm actually posting about this.  I follow a lady on Twitter, read her blog and frequent her online yarn store.  She has created a challenge for herself and opened it up to anyone willing called "i am gorgeous aka the great de-frump of 2012".  To do 12 projects this year to liven up our wardrobes.  I think this means I'm in!

Next post:  my plan.
